Sunday Scribblings - "Fridge space"

My very first Sunday Scribbling. And the prompt is “Fridge Space”. I'm afraid it's going to be a lot of nonsense, but I'm going to consider it as an exercise in loosening the creative nuts and bolts in my brain. They've seized from disuse (and some misuse). So here goes:

Why fridge space? It’s not something I’ve thought about consciously. All I know about fridge space is that things expand in direct proportion to the space available within to store them. My fridge is always stacked four deep with things of varying sizes and shapes. Sometimes they are in boxes, sometimes in plastic bags, sometimes they just are. The items which find their way into the far recesses of the fridge stay there, sometimes for years, because once outta sight, they’re outta mind. Their discovery depends entirely on serendipity but their freedom is not always synonymous with discovery, because by then they have welded themselves immovably to the ice on the back wall of the fridge. Chances are they will not be released without the help of an Arctic explorer’s ice-pick and a lot of hard work. I don’t see that happening any time soon.

Nowadays I try not to let food items go into the back because I fear that there are new life forms that have probably evolved in the ice (although I haven’t dared to check) which might take over all my food and the space within. So I try to keep everything in the front half without anything touching the iced-up walls, which is not really possible and involves a lot of time spent squatting in front of the fridge trying to balance all the items on the various shelves. It is quite an interesting task, requiring dexterity and imagination. It can be challenging too, because I tend to get quite cold while arranging my items. I haven’t found out how to get around this without having to wear winter gear, which unbalances me. Besides, wearing gloves means that my fingers arent nimble and I lose the delicate touch required to pile the items just so.

Meanwhile, my fridge space is getting smaller because of the creeping ice in the back. I might have to get a new fridge with more space, or move house.

Great stuff! Your fridge clearly has a life of its own.

how about you first clear out the fridge and defrost it to remove the ice.

then make a running inventory of what is there. i.e. item description, date of entering fridge and an expiry date if there is one. once the item is finished, cross it out and consciously try to finish items which entered earlier if possible. that way you know at a glance what is there and you can plan it better.

after writing this, it occurs to me that you probably dont want advice but you are just having a random scribble.

shades of stephen king! all perfectly nice and innocuous till you come to the creeping ice bit :-)get a new fridge, i think -- one of those industrial, walk-in type things...

Keep on loosening your creative nuts and bolts...

PS: You might neither need a new fridge nor to move house. How about thawing the fridge? It's a nuisance, I know, but I've done it, and you get a fridge with an entirely improved feel :)

Sounds like a touch of Narnia has moved out of the wardrobe :-)
Have you noticed whether the food is depleted without you knowing? Whatever's in there, you could be feeding it.
Great post.

Defrost it. That way you won't need buy a new one. Saves on your electricity bill. More the ice, more is the power consumption.

I remember the days of defrosting a refrigerator. I do not miss it. Great read.

I defrost mine twice a year. I use a hairdryer and all the ice is gone in half hour. Been doing that for years.

I agree with Meerkat's first para. There is no easy solution except a bit of suffering, either in the form of cleaning and defrosting, which you means you may have to confront icy monsters that have flourished wihin, or chuck this fridge with its contents and get a new one. No, not a walk-in fridge, please, that sounds horrible -- what if u get locked in?! -- Your paranoia-struck cuz.

A few people suggested it. It's the only solution. Defrost it. And have a large bin beside you as you remove items from the fridge. Then, when it's all clean and you're putting things back, you could take a tip from one of the other sunday scribblers, and use trays to keep similar items together, so nothing stays at the back of the fridge for ever!

Welcome to Sunday Scribblings!

I think your "creative nuts and bolts" have done a fine job here. I can certainly feel your pain over the creeping ice! LOL I'm fairly new to SS, as well. Welcome!
