Why must the Americans pronounce the words Iraq and Iran as “Eye-raq” and “Eye-ran”?

Rush said...: Shyam, been a long time reader and had to de-lurk for your "eye-rritating observation"... I have found this Eye-raq thing so annoying, especially when news readers butcher it! It's also interesting to note that it's only Eye-raq and Eye-ran and not Eye-taly.
