Sunday Scribblings - "Art"

What wouldn’t I give to understand the concept behind those works of modern art that sell for millions in auctions, and are valued at unimaginable sums of money, and yet seem to be junk or at the very least a joke on all so-called connoisseurs… works like a stone wrapped in an embroidered cloth, a room filled with crumpled newspaper, a red dot in the middle of a bare white canvas, a jumble of body parts in psychedelic colours… etc…

What wouldn’t I give… let’s see… Hmm.

- Money

- Time

- Consideration

- Thought

- Any more space on this post

My husband took me to a modern art museum in Dallas. If we hadn't been newly married - I'd have killed him!

Even though I'm an artist, I understand because I respect all art, but it IS hard to appreciate some types that are "not my interest."

LOL to "just another mommy"'s comment.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who doesn't "get" this stuff.

Some of the extremely simple pieces puzzle me, too...I sometimes struggle with why those are deemed valuable in a museum. (Like the white canvas with a single black horizontal line, or a fork with one tine bent to the left...???)

I think sometimes a piece is created as a joke and critics love it, giving it life. Just like a bad movie.

I've been surprised to discover that, when I see some pieces in reality, I may not understand them any better than previously (as in, being able to explain them to someone else), but I find a response in me that I hadn't expected. ... I'm thinking of seeing Andy Warhol's soupcans, and some Mark Rothko lately. Maybe some artists are taking us for fools, but maybe there is something there that's worth experiencing. I think I'm going to be more open-minded from here on.

enjoyed your post - isn't it great that for every piece we just "don't get" there can be found another that just screams at us on a gut level???

Another man's art...it is so true that art is truly in the eye of the beholder. Good post!

I think sometimes a work of art is when the artist captures a moment that others couldn't see.

Hey..it's that old guy in Maine again.

I thought all it took was suffering unimaginably all your life for no money and then death. Then the darned thing was worth money.

Aww...just kidding
